Ethyca (https://ethyca.com) is a high-growth Series A startup building the trust infrastructure of the internet. Ethyca’s platform powers data privacy for businesses facing regulations like GDPR and CCPA all over the world. We do this by building world-class tools, developer-friendly APIs, and secure, deployed applications to make it easy for our customers to integrate all their systems together to provide their users with powerful rights over their personal data.

As Ethyca's inaugural UX engineer, you’ll be responsible for designing our developer experiences from the initial mockups all the way through the front-end framework, and consulting on implementation. As a member of the product team, you’ll help to distill product requirements into low- or high-fidelity wireframes and facilitate a seamless transition to implementation with the engineering team. Your super power is understanding complex engineering concepts and translating them into a user experience for non-technical users across any enterprise vertical: lawyers, product managers, and business operations resources.

What you will do
  • Champion UX best practices to ensure we’re all making informed design decisions together.
  • Work with product and engineering team to craft achievable design solutions using your experience (or dribbble and codepen search skills!) that can be implemented quickly and will lead to immediate value for the user community.
  • Build prototypes, wireframes and high-fidelity mockups using design tools like Invisio, Figma and Sketch to workshop and develop on requirements.
  • Build prototypes or bootstrap components using React or Angular to help convey an idea to other engineers and stakeholders.

Who you are
  1. A former or current engineer, or just an engineer at-heart. You have at least 3 years of experience implementing front-end web technologies (oo js, react, angular etc) and against web standards including html5 and css3.
  2. A skilled designer and eager to learn. You have at least 4 years experience designing and building product experiences for end-users and have shipped design for a product used by a significant user base. You have a have a strong understanding of user-centered design and product thinking when making design decisions, and you back that understanding with compelling design solutions. You are able to quickly build up an understanding of all experiences and touch points that go into delivering value to our customers.
  3. An empathetic interaction designer. You craft high quality, end to end experiences. You build straightforward user flows, information architecture, and utilize the tenants of strong interaction design in your work. You leverage design systems for consistency and pay attention to the details of each screen. You work with engineers to ship experiences that are usable and aesthetically pleasing.
  4. Firm believer in user-centered design thinking. At Ethyca, our users are lawyers, business operations, and engineers; your being an engineer and bridging compliance/privacy needs with design for a diversity of user types is instrumental to the success of the product.  You enjoy learning from customers and team members, and you’re comfortable participating in research regularly to test, clarify or validate assumptions. You know how to measure the results of your work and understand its downstream effects on users and compliance rqeuirements.
  5. A skilled written communicator. You are comfortable writing in-product copy and light technical education materials. You believe in the power of succinct, efficient copy for the product, documentation and internal communication to the product engineering and design teams.

Senior Open Source Software Engineer (Python)

Ethyca
Feb 16, 2022Apply

Job Description

Time zones: EST (UTC -5), CST (UTC -6), MST (UTC -7), PST (UTC -8)

Ethyca (https://ethyca.com) is a high-growth Series A remote startup on a mission to make Trust, Respect and Privacy a default feature of every tech stack. To accomplish this, we created the Fides open source language for data privacy (https://ethyca.com/fides/) and its related suite of free developer tools to enforce privacy policies as code, automate users’ right to access and erase their data, and much more. We believe software engineers are uniquely equipped to solve modern privacy challenges, but only if we work together on shared standards and best practice tools - come join our team and help make this a reality!

As a developer-first company, engineering is an integral part of everything at Ethyca. On our rapidly growing Engineering team, you’ll be making decisions that have a significant impact on the product and company. You’ll have the opportunity to learn from our team, our customers, and our community: all of which happen to include some of the best privacy engineers in the world. You’ll work with a wide variety of technologies and design APIs and features that are rapidly deployed to solve complex data privacy problems at scale.

Our open source teams are responsible for maintaining the Fides developer tools (e.g. fideslang, fidesctl, fidesops) that bring privacy best practices directly into the software engineering development process. As a member of the core team, you will be a full-time contributor to these open source projects and can work on features across the stack depending on your strengths: integrating with databases, designing APIs, writing documentation, or engaging with our growing community on issues and PRs.

Responsibilities
  • Build, test, and release high-quality open source software to the world
  • Ensure high-quality standards for code, testing, documentation, etc.
  • Anticipate problems and proactively suggest architecture to stay ahead
  • Work autonomously on large software projects that deliver on shared goals
  • Collaborate with your team and the community to write technical specs, plan projects, and document your work
  • Provide community support and help troubleshoot complex issues quickly and thoroughly

Requirements
  • 4+ years experience writing production-grade web applications or services
  • Expertise with Python 3, web frameworks (e.g. Django, Flask, FastAPI), and RESTful APIs
  • Proficient with one or more data stores such as MySQL, Postgres, MongoDB, Snowflake, etc.
  • Fluent with automated testing frameworks (unit, integration, E2E) and CI/CD tools (e.g. GitLab, GitHub)
  • Love writing tests for everything you do
  • Some examples of contributing to or maintaining open source projects is a plus
  • Previous experience working independently in a high velocity environment where rapid iteration is vital (like a startup!)
  • Excellent written communication skills and a love for documentation and collaboration
  • Experienced working in an asynchronous environment like an open source project or distributed team
  • Comfortable with agile processes and best practices (but not doctrine!)

Benefits
  • Competitive cash and equity compensation
  • 100% medical and dental insurance coverage
  • Remote-friendly core office hours (10 - 2 ET) and vacation policy
  • Sponsored company lunches and events
  • Parental leave and 401K plan

Requirements

tarting software engineer at heart. With 3-5 years of engineering or technical writing experience working with SaaS software products, you know just enough SQL and noSQL, have implemented API and git documentation best practices, have gotten tangled in containerized deployments once or twice, and are familiar with cloud service management products like AWS, GCP, Azure. And we markdown, and hope you do too!\n* Empathetic to developers and their needs. Youve written developer-facing documentation for 1-3 years and are able to quickly adapt to community and internal feedback. Software engineers dont yet know that they should expect a lot from a data privacy product baked into their SDLC process. We are here to educate them and provide a best-in-class experience using our developer-focused open-source tools.\n* An independent yet collaborative contributor, your experience managing documentation projects independently in a complex, highly technical space means youve worked with net-sec-ops, devops teams, data/base engineering teams, marketing, and product engineering teams and you know how and when to engage each.\n* A relentless troubleshooter. No problem too tough, no issue too elusive; we are looking for someone who will tackle the sometimes nebulous documentation from engineers and work through it, rather than around it. \n* An egoless, yet expert liaison between Ethyca open-source engineering teams and the developer community. Great writing is everyones responsibility at Ethyca, but sometimes we need a little help (okay, a lot of help!) from experts like you! You are an exceptional writer, nay, wordsmith, that understands that effective, concise writing leads to better comprehension of complex systems.\n\n## Benefits\n* Competitive cash and equity compensation\n* 100% medical and dental insurance coverage for you and your dependent(s)\n* Remote-friendly office hours and vacation policy\n* Sponsored company lunches and events\n* Parental leave and 401K plan\n\n\nWe are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
